Meet Dr. Maggie
Hello, my name is Dr. Maggie MacDonald, founder of Compassionate Pet Vet. In 2001, I graduated from veterinary school and started working in a busy general practice. For seven years, I helped numerous families say goodbye to their pets in the same exam rooms I grew to know and love these pets and their families. I provided all sorts of care when they were sick, injured, or in need of regular preventive care.
When it came time for that final goodbye-visit, however, I felt that I could provide something better. The more I thought about it, several facts became abundantly clear to me:
- For many pets who are near end-of-life, it is extremely difficult, painful, or impossible for them to get into and out of a car.
- Many pets near end-of-life are feeling nauseous and that feeling can be worsened with motion.
- Many pets near end-of-life experience pain to the touch and would prefer to be touched as little as possible.
- Many pets (not only those who are near end-of-life) find the veterinary clinic to be a terrifying space. This may be due to the fact that most of their experiences at a clinic involve getting poked and prodded. The smells and sounds of other anxious animals found in clinic settings are also very alarming to many pets.
- Many pet parents would prefer to avoid a sterile, clinical atmosphere when having to say goodbye to their beloved family member.
As the facts became clear to me, so did the solution. I could provide something that would make this last visit better. Compassionate Pet Vet was created based on this commitment.
