Xena found us–a wandering kitten who ambled into our yard and hearts and joined our lives–back in the summer of 2000. She was small and beautiful and fearless. In her long prime, she would face down big toms and bigger dogs without a moment of doubt, and she never passed a ladder that she wouldn’t climb. She ruled for nearly 21 years.
In her last months, she declined from kidney disease–we first called in May–but Xena fought her way back and endured for another 9 months. Thanks to everyone at Compassionate Pet Vet for supporting our last minute decision to give her more time. You told us “She isn’t ready to go yet. You’ll know when it is time.” And you were right.
Finally, even our warrior princess couldn’t overcome time and biology. On her last day, her eyes were bright and intelligent, even though her body was failing. Now it was time. We are thankful beyond words for Dr. Laurie’s gentle, caring guidance through Xena’s final hour. She explained everything patiently, and she listened to our stories, looked at our pictures, and gave us room for sadness. Ours were the last faces Xena saw, our hands were the last touches she felt, and our bed where she had chosen to nap as usual was the place she left this world.
Everyone at Compassionate Pet Vet was wonderful and responsive and always helpful. Thanks to Dr. Laurie for assuring that Xena ended her life without pain and with dignity, in a calm, familiar, and loving place.
