I’ve called Dr. MacDonald twice this year (it’s been a rough one) to put each of my 20ish-year-old cats to sleep, and I can’t recommend her services highly enough.
My two kitties were with me for 12 years, moved across the country with me multiple times, and were my constant companions for my entire adult life. When my first cat developed invasive cancer and began to lose her quality of life, I knew it was the right decision to put her to sleep. Still, as other pet owners will understand, it’s an excruciating decision, made even more difficult when your pet hates being forced into a carrier to go to the vet.
I love my primary vet, but I couldn’t stand the thought of my cat’s last moments being stressful and scary for her, and I was so heartened to find a service that would allow me to put her to sleep at home.
Finding Dr. MacDonald was the one bright spot in the whole experience. She was compassionate, kind, and accommodating from our very first conversation, and she couldn’t have been kinder or more comforting–while still handling things completely professionally–when the time came.
My kitty loved to sit in a little cat house on our back porch, and Dr. MacDonald administered the sedative shot there. I don’t even think she knew another person was there; she just fell asleep peacefully in her favorite spot while I scratched her chin, which is really the best a pet owner can hope for from the death of a beloved family member.
Dr. MacDonald was wonderful about explaining what she was doing at each step and what would happen next, and she seemed to know exactly what balance to strike between offering support and giving me space to be with my cat in her final moments. She even sent my primary vet a note to let them know my cat was euthanized, saving me a difficult and awkward conversation.
When my second kitty went into kidney failure this past week and took a rapid turn for the worst over the weekend, I called Dr. MacDonald again, and she was kind enough to come out on a Sunday to put him to sleep and allow him to rest. She was just as wonderful this time as she was the first time.
I highly, highly recommend her services (and as an FYI, she charges about the same price as I’ve paid to euthanize a pet in the past at the vet clinic–I don’t know how much fees for this vary from vet to vet, but I found her service fee to be more than fair and completely worth it).
